EDUCATION
Ruth Briggs King's Position on Education
As a former teacher and lifelong advocate for education, I know firsthand the importance of a strong, effective education system. Education is the foundation of a prosperous future for our children, our communities, and our state. Unfortunately, Delaware’s schools are facing significant challenges, from high absenteeism rates to increasing classroom disruptions, making it difficult for teachers to teach and students to learn.
Putting First Things First in Education
My plan focuses on addressing the critical issues impacting our schools and ensuring that we prioritize teacher support, student success, and parent involvement. Here’s how we can put First Things First in Delaware’s education system:
-
Addressing Classroom Disruptions: Teachers need the tools and support to manage their classrooms effectively. My plan includes implementing solutions to tackle classroom disruptions, creating safer, more productive learning environments.
-
Supporting Teachers: We need to invest in teacher retention and attract new, passionate educators to our schools. Teachers deserve competitive salaries, better benefits, and opportunities for professional growth so they can stay in the classroom and continue making a difference.
-
Reducing Chronic Absenteeism: Delaware is seeing alarmingly high absenteeism rates, particularly in our most at-risk communities. My goal is to reduce chronic absenteeism by 50% in four years, ensuring that all students receive the education they deserve.
-
Statewide Surveys for Continuous Improvement: Gathering insights from teachers, parents, and students is essential for making informed policy decisions. I will implement statewide surveys in 2025 and 2027 to guide our policies, actions, and investments in education.
-
Innovative Teacher Growth Opportunities: I believe in empowering teachers and school leaders to grow within the profession. We need to create innovative pathways for educators to thrive, which will ultimately benefit our students.
The Importance of Accountability
To improve Delaware’s education system, accountability is key. We must ensure that resources are being used effectively and that schools are meeting the needs of our students. I will work to strengthen accountability measures across the board, ensuring that public funds are spent wisely and that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Early Learning and Family Support
Investing in early childhood education is crucial, but we must ensure that families have access to the right resources. My plan includes making postpartum depression resources readily available to families and providing early learning support to set our youngest learners on the path to success from the very beginning.
A Vision for Better Schools in Delaware
My vision is simple: to create an education system where teachers can teach, students can learn, and parents’ voices are heard. By putting First Things First in education, we can give our children the opportunity they deserve to reach their full potential.
Education is at the heart of building a stronger Delaware. As your next Lieutenant Governor, I will work tirelessly to ensure our schools have the support, resources, and leadership they need to thrive.
Vote Ruth Briggs King for Lieutenant Governor—Together, we can put First Things First in Delaware’s education system.
